It was on September 14, 2017 that I was one of eight speakers at the first one-day conference dedicated to Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo. The conference was organized by Trinity College professor Donal “Dee” Martin and held at the Central Hotel in Dublin. Vertigo had recently been voted the “Greatest Film of All Time,” in the Sight & Sound magazine’s 2012 prestigious “Greatest Films of All Time” poll, replacing Citizen Kane, which had held the top spot for 50 years. Vertigo was ranked as the greatest film in a poll of international film critics, academics, and distributors. Each of the speakers, all academics except me, spoke about different aspects of Vertigo or Hitchcock. My presentation was, “Vertigo: Costuming a Masterpiece.”
Since then Dee Martin has held several more VERTIGO Conferences, and the final one is planned: “Vertigo67: The Final Reckoning” the Fourth International Film Conference: “Hitchcock’s Vertigo: 67th Anniversary,
Tuesday 12 August – Friday 15 August 2025. Twenty speakers from around the world will be featured.
Venue Day 1: Lighthouse Cinema Venue Day 2-4: Trinity Long Room Hub, Trinity College Dublin. See www.VERTIGO67.com
I also wrote a more in depth view of Vertigo in my blog post: VERTIGO: HITCHCOCK’S MYTH & SYMBOLISM that looks behind the facade of this classic film.
